Durst Lambda Imaging Terms

Description and picture of the Durst Lambda

Terms to use when using and handling work intended for the Lambda Imager. This list was last revised on: 12/8/98.

Art or Artwork: hand-produced reflective materials supplied by our customers. Often with delicate surfaces, and of significant value to customers. To be used for Lambda Imaging, it must be converted to a digital file, usually by Scanning.

ATM: The generic acronym for Adobe type 1 Fonts. This is the preferred Foundry type for customer-supplied files to be printed on the Lambda. See also: Font, Foundry, below.

Borders: in our trade, this refers to line or line-like elements which frame an image or layout. When supplied materials have borders, please specify if cropping includes or excludes borders.

Color Match: instruction which should be followed by the type of targeted match desired; eg: Color Match Originals, Color Match Supplied Sample, Color Match PMS spec.

Cropping: the designation of a part or section of supplied materials to be reproduced.

DPI: Dots Per Inch. A generic designation of measurement, which can refer to any measured resolution, e.g.: File Resolution, Monitor Resolution, Print Resolution, etc. See also: PPI, below.

DuraClear: A plastic-based Lambda-printable material which is fully transparent, except for the printed image, which is translucent. An appropriate choice for transparent applications, e.g: windows.

DuraFlex: A plastic-based Lambda-printable material which is fully opaque. The white background has a warm cast. An appropriate choice for reflective applications where durability greater than paper is desired.

DuraTrans: A plastic-based Lambda-printable material which is translucent (frosty) appearing. An appropriate choice for light box applications.

Durst Phototechnik, AG: Manufacturer of the Lambda Imager, headquartered in Brixen, Italy.

Enlargement: An image reproduced at a bigger size than the original.

Font: The typeographic family of a particular style. Similar fonts exist from differing Foundries. See Foundry below.

Format: 1. size of item being described, in relative description to proportions; eg: 4X5 Format, 11X17 Format. Usually intended for standardized sizes. 2. File type, as in File Format: Tif, EPS, etc. 3. Disk Format: the particular Disk Operating System as written to media such as floppy disk, SyQuest cartridge, Zip disk, etc. Two standards are IBM Format and Mac Format.

Foundry: The manufacturer of a particular Font. Adobe (ATM Type 1 or 3), Bitstream, TrueType are three types.

Fuji Matte: Matte paper manufactured by Fuji which holds color fidelity well. This paper type has a watermark logo on the back. This logo may show in light boxes if image areas are light.

Fuji Gloss: Gloss paper manufactured by Fuji which holds color fidelity well. This paper type has a watermark logo on the back, but since gloss paper is not typical for lightbox applications, no alternative is stocked by Color Wise.

Full Bleed: image to extend to limit of format; minimum crop to fill format. Example: "Short side to 8", full bleed".

Full Frame: means no cropping, and hold whatever side hits first if requested format of reproduction is not proportional.

Gloss: A shiny finish of one type of paper type for the Lambda.

Lambda 130: The model of the Laser printing device manufactured by Durstand installed by Color Wise. This device produces photographically processed images on various reflective and transmissive materials.

Long/Short: the prefered designation of selected dimension for control of sizing of image. Please use Long or Short instead of Top or Bottom, or Vertical or Horizontal.

Matte: A less reflective surfaced paper type for the Lambda.

Mitsubishi Matte: Matte paper manufactured by Mitsubishi which has no watermark logo. Print density, especially on dark colors is lacking the range available on Fuji paper, but the clean back makes it an appropriate choice for light box applications.

Original: image source, usually meant as: customer-supplied copy.

PPI: Pixels Per Inch. This is the correct and modern way to indicate the resolution of a digital file. Sometimes inexperienced customers may refer to resolution as DPI, which is a more generic designation, meaning Dots Per Inch.

Reduction: an image reproduced at a smaller size than the original.

Retouch: Altering the color and or detail of digital files to meet customer instructions. This work is typically done with Adobe Photoshop, and can be time-intensive and skillful work.

Scan or Scanning: The digital process of creating an electronic file from customer original materials. There are several different options, based on the type of copy submitted, and its end use. These options are best discussed with the customer before job submission.

Test Print: Product from the Lambda, typically at 16x20" size on selected final material, for customer approval. The Test Print is typically a selected or specified area of the final print, at final resolution. A Test Print as a reduced size from final size is not recommended because color range reduction and pixellation may occur at the final output which may not show on a reduced-size version. A typical Test Print is billed at a flat rate.

Tif or Tiff: Tagged Image File Format. A type of digital file from which the Lambda works. This format is produced for the Lambda by the Cheetah Rip, but may be supplied from other sources for direct imaging on Lambda. If supplied directly, the Tif file must be 200 ppi at the desired output size, and must be an IBM formatted Tif file.

TrueType: A type of font which customers may use in supplied files. This type of font is variable in printability, and is less preferredthan ATM or Adobe type 1 fonts.
